The diagnostic tool of intercultural communication apprehension presents the report of the competency skills that I need to maintain while communicating with the people diverse in cultural background and personal traits (Robles, 2012). I have observed that while communicating with the people from different cultural background, I might have to deal with the innumerable language barriers as well as the cultural barriers as well. While dealing with the people from different cultural and linguistic values, I shall improve the competency skills to communicate in the cross-cultural situations. I can even utilize the non-verbal communication process to communicate with the people from different cultural background. The non-verbal communication deals with the various body languages, written communication, facial expression, and signs (Royle Laing, 2014). I have to be cautious about present these non-verbal gestures as I need to clarify the message. The non-verbal communication is often misi nterpreted that can affect the corporate environment. The self-perceived communication competence scale (SPCC) diagnostic tool provides me the insights about my personality trait that is foreseen while I am working with my coworkers at my workplace. The obtained scores from this diagnostic tool signify that I need to be more competent to deal with the different uncertainties that may occur within the workplace. It is notable that while working with the other employees from various cultures, I might have to face the considerable challenges around. However, it is necessary to respond to the situation accordingly. I need to bring the improvements in my communicational competency in such situation. The maintenance of the flexibility is essential for me to discuss any crucial situation. I can take the active participation in the group discussion. If my business managers want me to take the participation in any group discussion, I take this opportunity to develop my communicational efficiency. It is noticeable that in a conference meeting, people perceive different psychological values. When I become a speaker, I always concentrate on delivering the speech in an effective way. While conducting this test, I have observed that I possess an effective and active listening skill that helps in providing the remarkable speech. In the personal report of public speaking anxiety, I scored average as I need some improvements in delivering speech. I need to work on minimizing my nervousness while communicating in public. The report obtained from non-verbal immediacy scale highlights that I face the several recognizable challenges in maintaining the non-verbal communication with the other workers at my workplace. Non-verbal communication needs to be skilled enough while maintaining the interactive sessions with others. People from different cultural background face the negative consequences as well (Mascle, 2013). Therefore, it is quite obvious that I need to communicate with them with more efficiency by diminishing my nervousness and anxiety. The non verbal skill report, on the other hand, highlights my score of 85, which determines the higher efficiency level in this aspect. While communicating with the people from diverse cultural background, I use the remarkable non-verbal communication skills. I scored 25 in talkaholic scale, which indicates that I am quite efficient as a communicator or performer. Round River by Aldo Leopold In the essay the "Round River" Aldo Leopold was trying to say many different ideas that related together in the fight for nature preservation and restoration. One of Aldo Leopolds main points in his essay was that we as humans can not replace, rebuild nature. So before it goes to far, and get's to destroyed we must restore it. As people though we can only do so much and we can't restore it with foreign plants, but only the natural plants that originated there. So if we destroy an area's ecosystem then we can never restore, and replenish it to its original state and land consistency. In his essay Leopold said that "we have radically modified the biotic system because we had to. Food chains now begin with corn, and alfalfa instead of oaks and bluestem, flows through cows, hogs, and poultry instead of into elk, deer, and grouse." Therefore we can never restore damage done but only reroute it. Another point in his essay is that all land is one mechanism and if you damage one part then you intern damage or affect another part. So we cannot fully preserve land because our scientists cannot recognize all of the earth's mechanisms. For instance if you kill the wolves then the rabbit and deer population may rise without as high of predation. Another major point in his essay is that if we are going to prevent a species from extinction we must do it everywhere not just in one specific place. The worlds whale population is not going to rise if only the United States bans whale hunting. And if we don't enforce poaching laws and regulations. This also refers to if you tamper with one organism you affect a lot more. If we kill all the whales not only can we not use them but larger sea predators like sharks can't either. So they will be forced to feed on smaller sea life and then damage our sea food supply by eating other fish that we eat. So we as a whole must conserve on our supplies of natural objects with our exponentially growing population. We are also over concerned with now compared to the future which I believe to be more important . The world is to caught up in todays tinkerings to think about the end effects. Leopold stated "that with each substitution of a tame plant or animal for a wild one, or an artificial waterway for a natural one is accompanied by a readjustment in the circulating system of the land." Potiki And The Art Of Telling Stories :: essays research papers
This is an explorative essay on the theme in Patricia Graceââ¬â¢s novel Potiki that ââ¬Ëtelling and retelling stories is an important and valuable part of being humanââ¬â¢. An important theme in Potiki is the enduring idea that creating and sharing stories as a central part of being human is important. It is a significant theme because the novel is heavily imbued with Maori culture, in which the stories and spoken teachings are given prominence, and also because it is a popular belief that people need narratives to give meaning, structure and value to their lives. This theme is displayed resolutely and poignantly in Potikiââ¬â¢s plot, characters, setting and symbolism, as the people of a small rural New Zealand community rediscover themselves through stories spoken and found in Maori carvings. The idea that humans need narratives is the core theme in Potiki, and it is used also to link other themes and aspects of the novel; it is in this way that we know the idea of storytelling is an intrinsic part of the novelââ¬â¢s structure. The idea that ââ¬Ëcreating and sharing stories is important as a central part of being humanââ¬â¢ is shown in Potikiââ¬â¢s plot and characters when the mother of the main family in the book, Roimata, decides to let two of her children learn at home instead of at school. Instead of teaching them herself in the style of a traditional European education system, both Roimata and the children learn naturally from stories and histories which are shown as being part of everyone's life. For example, Roimata says, ââ¬Å"It was a new discovery to find that these stories were, after all, about our own lives, were not distant, that there was no past or future that all time is now-time, centred in the being.â⬠(Pp39.) In this way Roimata and the children are essentially learning in a way in which all people learn to some extent: by sharing stories. The idea that the telling and retelling of stories sustains, enlarges and defines our view of the world is shown in Potiki when Roimata continues, ââ¬Å"They were not new stories to us, except that stories are always new, or else there is always something new in stories.â⬠(Pp132.) The character is emphasising the moral and educational value of stories in human development and understanding by saying that there is always something to learn from stories, even when they are retold repeatedly.

Dr. Jose Rizal Writing
Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (June 19, 1861 ââ¬â December 30, 1896), was a Filipino nationalist, novelist, poet, ophthalmologist, journalist, and revolutionary. He is widely considered the greatest national hero of the Philippines. He was the author of Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, and a number of poems and essays. He was executed on December 30, 1896 by a squad of Filipino soldiers of the Spanish Army. He returned to the Philippines in 1892, but was exiled due to his desire for reform. Although he supported peaceful change, Rizal was convicted of sedition and executed on December 30, 1896, at age 35. On June 19, 1861, Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was born in Calamba in the Philippines' Laguna Province. A brilliant student who became proficient in multiple languages, Jose Rizal studied medicine in Manila. In 1882, he traveled to Spain to complete his medical degree. While in Europe, Jose Rizal became part of the Propaganda Movement, connecting with other Filipinos who wanted reform. He also wrote his first novel, Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not/The Social Cancer), a work that detailed the dark aspects of Spain's colonial rule in the Philippines, with particular focus on the role of Catholic friars. The book was banned in the Philippines, though copies were smuggled in. Because of this novel, Rizal's return to the Philippines in 1887 was cut short when he was targeted by police. Rizal returned to Europe and continued to write, releasing his follow-up novel, El Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed) in 1891. He also published articles in La Solidaridad, a paper aligned with the Propaganda Movement. The reforms Rizal advocated for did not include independenceââ¬âhe called for equal treatment of Filipinos, limiting the power of Spanish friars and representation for the Philippines in the Spanish Cortes (Spain's parliament). Rizal returned to the Philippines in 1892, feeling he needed to be in the country to effect change. Although the reform society he founded, the Liga Filipino (Philippine League), supported non-violent action, Rizal was still exiled to Dapitan, on the island of Mindanao. During the four years Rizal was in exile, he practiced medicine and took on students. In 1895, Rizal asked for permission to travel to Cuba as an army doctor. His request was approved, but in August 1896, Katipunan, a nationalist Filipino society founded by Andres Bonifacio, revolted. Though he had no ties to the group, and disapproved of its violent methods, Rizal was arrested shortly thereafter. After a show trial, Rizal was convicted of sedition and sentenced to death by firing squad. Rizal's public execution was carried out in Manila on December 30, 1896, when he was 35 years old. His execution created more opposition to Spanish rule. Spain's control of the Philippines ended in 1898, though the country did not gain lasting independence until after World War II. Rizal remains a nationalist icon in the Philippines for helping the country take its first steps toward independence. The greatest contribution of Dr. Jose rizal in our country is the two novel he written; the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, by this many filipinos awaken by the slavery of Spaniards to the Filipinos. He used these two writings instead of holding a sword against the Spaniards. He proved to everybody that pen is mightier than a sword. He also organized the first cooperative in the Philippines while in exile in Dapitan. The Rizal's clay sculptures, including the one entitled Prometheus Bound, are very original. They are not only pleasing to look at, but also show social issues. Rizal used art as a medium to effect societal change. Rizal's pencil sketches also show techniques that were later used in comic strips. For these, the historian Gregorio Zaide nicknamed Rizal as the ââ¬Å"Leonardo da Vinci of the Philippinesâ⬠. He was also an exemplary example of Filipino Values. He also advocated a peaceful and a diplomatic way to speak out Spanish indifferences. Andres Bonifacio, on the other hand, advocated a bloody revolution, which is against the Filipino value of life. He also made anthropological researches on the physical and social make up man. He also experimented on various plants as he practiced horticulture. He also made researches on the physiology, classification and habits of animals. Aside from being an ophthalmologist, he practiced engineering and constructed a water system while in exile in Dapitan. His death gave new courage to the filipinos like emilio aguinaldo etc. to defend Filipino people from foreign accusations of foolishness and lack of knowledge; to show how the Filipino people lives during Spanish colonial period and the cries and woes of his countrymen against abusive officials; to discuss what religion and belief can really do to everyday lives; and to expose the cruelties, graft, and corruption of the false government at honestly show the wrongdoings of Filipinos that led to further failure. Dr. Jose Rizal Mercado y Alonso is by far, without a doubt, the greatest hero this nation can ever have. Ever since the very foundation of our early education, we have been taught about a man to whom we owe the sweet taste of independence we now have the privilege to enjoy. Rafael Palma, a person of great significance once said, ââ¬Å"The doctrines of Rizal are not for one epoch, but for all epochs. They are as valid today as they were yesterday and it will still be strongly valid in the future. This signifies the immortality of Rizalââ¬â¢s life, works, and genuine character. And as our beloved countryââ¬â¢s National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal will be remembered, forever. That we can be sure of. However, the world will never run out of skeptics. Some have lead themselves to believe that Dr. Rizal was a made-to-order hero; one that personifies what we want to see in a person, or in a hero, for this matter. But we strongly believe, that these opinions hold no truth. Dr. Jose Rizal was a very real human being. One who had his share of mistakes, and heartaches, but nevertheless stood for what he believed in, and lead his nation to freedom. Who made Jose Rizal our foremost national hero, and why? But before we can come up with a logical answer to that, we must first look into the character and works of Dr. Jose Rizal that made him our national hero. First and foremost, as stated by the authors Gregorio and Sonia Zaide in the book Jose Rizal, Dr. Rizal is our greatest hero because he took an ââ¬Å"admirable partâ⬠in that movement which roughly covered the period from 1882-1896. His wondrous magic with words in his writings, had a tremendous contribution to the formation of Filipino nationality, lead his fellow men to assert their right to our nation. Dr. Rizalââ¬â¢s works sparked a flame that set us free. The authors have previously stated, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦no Filipino has yet been born who could equal or surpass Rizal as ââ¬Å"person of distinguished valor or enterprise in danger, or fortitude in suffering. â⬠This is the second point. We can all agree about the fact that not one citizen of the country had yet to show the same characteristics, or had done the bravest of acts for his country as Dr. Jose Rizal. Considering his natural endowmentsââ¬âintellegence, wealth, influenceââ¬âDr.Jose Rizal couldââ¬â¢ve chosen a life in prosperity, up, up and away in another island. But instead, he dedicated his life into writing for the sake of his love for public service to the Filipino people, and the Philippines. nd lastly, Jose Rizal is the greatest Filipino hero because he is ââ¬Å"a man honored after death by public worship, because of exceptional service to mankind. â⬠(Gregorio and Sonia Zaide, Jose Rizal). He is still very highly remembered and ever adored because of his conviction, service, and great love for the Filipino people, and the country. This is because he is still celebrated years after he left the face of the earth. He was a great leader, who offered exceptional service to mankind. Going back to our main question: Who made Dr. Jose Rizal our foremost national hero, and why? My answer is going to be brief, and simple. Not one person or organization can be held responsible for making Dr. Jose Rizal our national hero. Rizal himself, his own people, and the foreigners all together contributed to make him the greatest hero and martyr of his people. This is because; Dr. Jose Rizal didnââ¬â¢t become our National Hero by way of traditional election. The fruits of his exceptional dedication and conviction to his lifeââ¬â¢s purpose are seen in our everyday lives. If he hadnââ¬â¢t, and among other note-worthy heroes of our history fought for our well-deserved freedom, maybe weââ¬â¢ll still be in the hands of our unjust captors. The Motorola executives always believed that producing better quality requires high costs, but the Japanese were proving this theory wrong. Bob Galvin, the chairman of Motorola was determined to beat the Japanese, and to do so he had to improve the quality of his companyââ¬â¢s products and often lower prices. For that reason, he initiated the Total Quality Management program in 1983. The result of this program was a drop in deficit rates from 6 per thousand in 1986 to 40 per million by the end of 1991. The same program helped the corporate finance department to close its books in 4 days instead of 12, and service centers have cut their repair time from 12 days to 7. Also as a result of this program, new products are brought to market quicker. In 1988, Motorola won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and in addition, the results have also been spectacular. As long as we are comfortable with our surroundings and ourselves we as human beings will always be resistant to change. We fear the unknown because we do not like to be challenged with change. In order to fully change an individualââ¬â¢s style of thinking and working, we must understand the theory and techniques in order to break down the barrier of resistance. Reasons for Resistance There are several reasons for resistance to change from employees. Some of these reasons include no personal gain, bad timing, job security, the unknown, lack of resources, and fear of incompetence. Individuals that are resistant to change fear the unknown when they do not know how it will affect their lives and the changes it will bring. I can relate to this in my job as the warehouse manager at Integrated Supply Network, Inc. ISN has been through several changes in the last year regarding reengineering the warehouse to improve quality for our internal and external customers. In 1999 under the guidance of another warehouse manager the warehouse was forced to change. The people that were tasked with making the change had a power struggle and a lack of trust and understanding with the past warehouse manager. This was due to the manipulation tactics that were used. Also, this person used the authoritarian leadership style to maintain control of the warehouse team. The manager tried to make changes without a plan or without asking questions. In the end the warehouse employees teamed together and got rid of the manager. As you will see we needed to have a plan to implement change. B...
